Concrete is one of those materials that seems simple but is actually incredibly complex, especially at altitude. The chemistry of cement hydration changes with temperature, humidity, and elevation. What works at sea level needs adjustment at 5,280 feet. And what works in mild climates fails spectacularly in Denver's extreme environment.

Air entrainment is the single most important factor for concrete durability in Colorado. Microscopic air bubbles throughout the concrete provide space for water to expand during freezing. Without adequate air entrainment (typically 5-7% for Denver conditions), concrete will spall and crumble within a few years regardless of the surface finish.

Base preparation is the second critical factor. Denver's clay soils expand and contract dramatically with moisture changes. Without a properly compacted subgrade and adequate gravel base, your concrete slab will heave, settle unevenly, and crack at locations you didn't plan for. We spend significant time on base work because it determines the long-term performance of everything above it.

Control joints are the third piece. Concrete cracks — that's physics. But where it cracks is controllable. Properly placed control joints direct cracking to planned locations where it's invisible and doesn't affect performance. We cut control joints at the right depth and spacing for each project.

Curing is the final critical step. In Denver's dry, sunny climate, concrete can lose moisture too quickly during curing, leading to surface weakness and premature cracking. We apply curing compounds and protect fresh concrete from rapid moisture loss. The 28-day curing period isn't just a suggestion — it's when your concrete reaches its design strength.
